Topsearch.co is an unhelpful web search engine
Lack of features
Topsearch.co is an alternative search engine that belongs to Ask Media Group, the company behind Ask.com and InformationVine.
Internet search engines are websites that take your search query and return relevant results. Google is one of the most popular search engines, and it’s what powers Topsearch.co, as well.
However, Topsearch.co is worse than Google:
- It shows way too many ads.
- It has no useful features.
Topsearch.co is a very advertising-focused search engine. It is not dangerous, however, it is also quite unhelpful. It lacks features that are essential to a search engine. There’s no Safe Search setting, language and geo settings, result types (news, maps, images, etc.), and no filtering based on date.
Browser hijackers and misleading ads
Topsearch.co also consistently displays unusually many ads, such as five at the top and the same at the bottom. Some of the ads are regular, relevant to the query ads. Others are for random browser hijackers like Gaming Wonderland and VideoConverterHD, which are, just like Topsearch.co, also made by Ask.
In fact, web analytics tools show that some of the browser hijackers by Ask get many of their visitors from sites like Topsearch.co. The ads are quite misleading, often using phrases like “Install Now” and “Download Now Free”. These ads show up when I search Topsearch.co for various software. It would be easy to get confused and think that the ad is for the item that I searched for – when it’s actually a random browser toolbar.
If you find yourself on Topsearch.co, be very careful about which results you click on and what you install, or else you might end up with adware on your browser.
Why are these ads allowed?
You may wonder how it is that such unhelpful and even potentially harmful ads are allowed to display on Topsearch.co. After all, they’re delivered by Google. In addition, there are quite a few complaints of ads for sites like Topsearch.co appearing in people’s Google search results.
Some people speculate why fake search engines like Topsearch.co can show Google ads (Support.google.com). It’s difficult to say for sure, besides that Ask is Google’s advertising partner and similar advertising has been allowed for years.
Limited results
Another thing that is strange about Topsearch.co is how limited its results are. There are some news sites, blogs, and many Ask-owned websites delivering the results, but I couldn’t get something obvious like Wikipedia to show up.
That’s fine, Topsearch.co is for Ask to manage, and there’s nothing wrong with specialized search engines. But I think this adds to the impression that Topsearch.co is not a search engine for regular use. I get the impression that it’s more of an advertising site.
It’s estimated that people who go on Topsearch.co also visit Kensaq.com, Info.com, Zapmeta.com, and other alternative search engines. These sites have the same characteristics as Topsearch.co of lacking features and showing excessive ads.
How to remove Topsearch.co
Now, if you’re seeing Topsearch.co regularly, there is likely a malicious browser hijacker on your browser or an adware infection on your computer. If you see an ad for Topsearch.co in your web search results, you may have a malicious browser extension installed.
Check your device for adware by scanning it with an anti-malware tool, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others. Remove unwanted extensions by following the instructions below.
Adware infections aren’t very malicious, they just want to redirect users to related websites and to record their online behavior. Still, it’s better to get rid of them.
In addition, many of the ads shown on Topsearch.co lead to browser hijackers. If you installed any of them, which is very easy to do without even meaning to, then it would be best to disable them or remove them.
