TrackaPackage is presented as a way for you to access shipment tracking information. It may look like a little package tracking browser assistant, but under the hood, it’s adware. TrackaPackage’s dishonest installation

TrackaPackage is recommended to visitors of Rapidtrack.net. People find Rapidtrack.net when they search for ways to track their own package using a tracking number. Many sites provide this service and, at first glance, Rapidtrack.net looks no different. But, whether your package is found or not, it will ask you to install the TrackaPackage extension. It does that dishonestly: it shows a button with the text “Continue (access complete tracking details)” which opens TrackaPackage’s installation.

You could say that this manipulative and deceptive site design is used to trick people to install TrackaPackage. People who don’t use extensions regularly are especially vulnerable here because they might not know exactly how browser extensions work and how they can be dangerous. Deceptive installation practices of browser extensions are nothing new – they’re made to get users to install a browser extension they don’t want or need.

Another problem with TrackaPackage is how it sometimes may lead users to install another dubious extension – Search Extension by Ask. Its installation page may pop up during TrackaPackage’s with a half-filled loading bar that makes it look like you’re just finishing up the earlier process.

As TrackaPackage belongs to the same company that Search Extension by Ask belongs to, it’s not surprising that they’re being distributed together. That company is Mindspark and it’s made a few other new tab hijackers, including EasyPackageTracker and PackageTracer.

Issues with TrackaPackage

TrackaPackage is ad-supported, but in my opinion, it is nowhere close to being good enough to justify that. All that it does once installed is point you to other package tracking websites. TrackaPackage on its own has no useful features to make it worth your attention.

TrackaPackage is not just a friendly package tracking extension. It’s also a new tab hijacker that works a bit like adware. It overrides your browser’s new tab page, so if you had made it yours with another extension or with your personal settings, TrackaPackage just replaces it – and it’s not customizable, so what you see is what you get. TrackaPackage could work great without overriding your new tab page, but then it couldn’t hijack your web search so easily and show you more ads, which is its real objective.

TrackaPackage’s new tab has a search bar for web search. But instead of using your default search engine (most people use Google.com), it uses MyWay.com. It’s owned by the same company that made TrackaPackage, of course. It’s a functional search engine, but it doesn’t have the same features that some people care about. It’s important to use a search engine that you trust and preferably not one whose creators use deceptive tactics to push their products to unwilling users.

Another unjustified feature of TrackaPackage is reading your browsing history. This can be used to more easily deliver you personalized ads. According to its privacy policy, your anonymous profile may be shared with third parties to help them tailor their ads to you not just on TrackaPackage, but elsewhere online, too.

How to remove TrackaPackage

You can uninstall TrackaPackage manually on your own and you can use an anti-malware program, such as Combo Cleaner for Mac or SpyHunter for PC, to do it. At the same time, remove all the potentially unwanted extensions and programs that are on your computer. Sometimes we install a lot of stuff we don’t use and that can get us in trouble later. Low-quality and malicious browser extensions are pretty bad:

• sometimes they can break and mess up your browser,
• they can be abused by malware to get access to your browser or your computer,
• they may track your personal data and share it with third parties,
• they may be updated or hijacked to show ads or turn malicious,
• malicious extensions can steal passwords, mine cryptocurrency in the background, and inject ads and malicious links in webpages.

At least TrackaPackage is only mild adware and nothing too bad. Still, before installing an extension, research it a little – read the reviews, look up the developer, and decide if you trust it.

How to remove TrackaPackage using Windows Control Panel

Many hijackers and adware like TrackaPackage New Tab install some of their components as regular Windows programs as well as additional software. This part of malware can be uninstalled from the Control Panel. To access it, do the following.

• Start→Control Panel (older Windows) or press Windows Key→Search and enter Control Panel and then press Enter (Windows 8, Windows 10).
• Choose Uninstall Program (if you don't see it, click in the upper right next to "View by" and select Category).
• Go through the list of programs and select entries related to TrackaPackage . You can click on "Name" or "Installed On" to reorder your programs and make TrackaPackage New Tab easier to find.
• Click the Uninstall button. If you're asked if you really want to remove the program, click Yes.
• In many cases anti-malware programs are better at detecting related parasites, thus I recommend installing Spyhunter to identify other programs that might be a part of this infection.

How to remove TrackaPackage from macOS

Delete TrackaPackage New Tab from your applications.

1. Open Finder.
2. In the menu bar, click Go.
3. Select Applications from the dropdown.
4. Find the TrackaPackage app.
5. Select it and right-click it (or hold the Ctrl and click the left mouse button).
6. In the dropdown, click Move to Bin/Trash. You might be asked to provide your login password.

• Click on the menu button on the top right corner of a Mozilla window and select the “Add-ons” icon (or press Ctrl+Shift+A on your keyboard).
  
• Go through Extensions and Addons list, remove everything TrackaPackage related and items you do not recognise. If you do not know the extension and it is not made by Mozilla, Google, Microsoft, Oracle or Adobe then you probably do not need it.
