What is Turbo Ad Blocker?
Turbo Ad Blocker should not be confused with Turbo Ad Finder.
Recently, Turbo Ad Blocker has described by a few malware blogs as an adware infection and a hijacker. Is it really dangerous?
It may be. I believe it is at least potentially unwanted. I would recommend you remove it and find a more reputable ad blocker to use.
Remember to use the official developer site to download your extensions, as there are many deceptive and abusive extensions discoverable on the Chrome web store (AD&POP Block Adware).
What’s so bad about Turbo Ad Blocker?
Turbo Ad Blocker is interesting. At first glance, it looks professional: it has a sleek home page, a good number of users on the Chrome Web Store, and perfect reviews. Most importantly, it blocks ads. As it should, as Turbo Ad Blocker uses modified AdGuard.
But there are a few things to note.
How do people find Turbo Ad Blocker?
I can’t find Turbo Ad Blocker without knowing its address. Searched for Turbo Ad Blocker on Google or another search engine and it doesn’t come up. Searched for it in the Chrome Web Store and this extension just was not there.
And yet, Turbo Ad Blocker’s extension page lists it as having more than 20,000 users. There are even a bunch of glowing reviews. How did these people find the add-on?
Well, first, I’m not sure that the reviews for Turbo Ad Blocker are even real. They are overwhelmingly positive, don’t comment on specific features, and cluster around a couple of dates. In addition, they are very for considering Turbo Ad Blocker has over twenty thousand users.
As for how people found Turbo Ad Blocker, it is probably through ads. Turbo Ad Blocker is advertised online and it might even show offers for other extensions after it’s installed.
These types of ads that appear during the installation of other software are problematic. They can cause confusion and lead people to install programs unintentionally. This is why Turbo Ad Blocker can be considered a potentially unwanted program.
Who made the extension?
Looking at Turbo Ad Blocker’s description, there’s no contact information other than a Gmail address. There’s also no privacy policy apart from a promise on the Chrome Web Store that it does not collect user data. For an extension that has more than 20,000 users and can read your data on all the sites that you visit, it is strange.
Let’s look at Turbo Ad Blocker’s home page, Turboadblocker.com. It has a pretty absurd claim – “200 million people recommending Turbo Ad Blocker”! I don’t know how to interpret this other than a joke. t feels like Turbo Ad Blocker was made by a troll.
I also noticed that much of the text on Turboadblocker.com is taken from Video-adblock.com. This is in addition to both add-ons sharing much of the same source code, including being based on AdGuard.
How to find reliable ad blockers
There are hundreds of various ad blockers on the Chrome Web Store. They’re easy to make, as you can just take the code of another extension and repackage it. Such extensions usually lack a lot of customization features and the newest updates that the major ad blockers have.
Clone ad blockers are also easy to monetize, as are most extensions. Ad blockers can ask to read the contents of the pages that you visit without raising suspicion, which has implications for privacy. A malicious extension could use this access to steal a lot of sensitive data.
While Turbo Ad Blocker does not seem to do that, it is nevertheless a suspicious extension made by unknown people. If it were to do something suspicious, there’d be no one to hold accountable.
Here are a few ways to find reliable ad blockers and avoid clones and fakes:
- Look at ad blocker reviews and recommendations on reputable websites.
- Look up the extension online. If it’s reliable, it will have discussions and communities around it.
Avoid extensions that have no history. - Only download ad blockers from official developer sites. Do not search for them in extension stores or app stores. Remember – there might be clone extensions that show up in search results.
- Read the privacy policy of the ad blocker and decide if you’re comfortable with it.
- Learn how the ad blocker makes money. This is important if you want to avoid browser hijackers and add-ons that sell your data.
- Use an anti-malware program, such as Malwarebytes. If you accidentally download a seriously malicious program, your security software will warn you.
