TV Hero Search Hijacker - How to remove

By Giedrius Majauskas

TV Hero is an extension for the Chrome browser that’s meant to help users access television and entertainment news. It hijacks the search settings and replaces your new tab page, using its power to advertise to you and to collect data about you. Though it is not especially dangerous, TV Hero should not be installed because it fails to provide any value and is only there to promote MySearch.com.

TV Hero is a search hijacker that exists to inflate the user count of a subpar ad-supported search engine:

  • Adware
  • Browser hijacker
How the search hijacker is installed
  • Ads on downloading and streaming sites
  • Adware ads
  • Misleading installation tactics
Problems with TV Hero

  • Causes you to see more ads
  • Has very low-quality functionality
Remove TV Hero
  • Delete adware using automatic tools (for example, Combo Cleaner for Mac, SpyHunter for PC)
  • Uninstall TV Hero and MySearch

How to remove TV Hero

TV Hero can be uninstalled by manually changing browser settings. The MySearch extension should also be removed. You can just click on their icons that are next to the address bar in your browser. In their drop-down menus, choose the removal option for both of them. That should free your browser from TV Hero’s tyranny.

Or you can use an anti-malware tool to do that for you. You might also want to scan your computer with a trusted security program, like Combo Cleaner for MacOS or SpyHunter for Windows. One of the problems with TV Hero is that it’s spread around by adware, so your computer might be infected. Either that, or you visit a lot of sites that show malicious ads.

TV Hero is also kind of malicious. It spreads via adware viruses and shady ad-networks like Adcash and PopAds – these are known for being aggressive and working with spammers and scammers. Its reviews on the Chrome Store are very fake. TV Hero is almost a carbon copy of MySportTab, ScreenDream, StreamFrenzy, showing how little their developer company cares about their quality and how much – about getting as many users as possible on MySearch.com.

How is TV Hero installed?

You can install TV Hero from the Chrome Web Store, like any other extension. But people don’t discover it on their own. Instead, TV Hero is advertised with redirects and pop-up and on certain websites:

  • file format converters,
  • video and audio converters,
  • torrent and pirating sites,
  • streaming sites for movies and tv shows.

Say you’re downloading a file from some converter site. TV Hero’s download site opens with the words “Click To Start Your Download” in the center in bold. Although the page does say that TV Hero is a browser extension, those words are in smaller font, out of the way and easy to miss. It would be very easy to accidentally download TV Hero because you believe that it is your file that you’re downloading. Here, TV Hero is giving you a classic example of deceptive installation tactics.

TV Hero also shows you a MySearch.com installation pop-up as an “additional offer”. It has a half-filled progress bar as an illustration, so if you’re distracted or just unsure of what’s going on, it’s easy to install the MySearch extension without meaning to. More deceptive installation tactics.

TV Hero is made to prey on people who are not very experienced using the internet. So, its installation process targets people who might not recognize deceptive installation when they first see it. TV Hero actually benefits the more inexperienced its user is because some of them might just allow TV Hero to sit in their browser and not remove it. Its owner company makes money from advertising, so TV Hero staying installed as long as possible is the goal.

Is TV Hero useful?

TV Hero is meant to help its users keep up to date with television news. This functionality consists of a few links on TV Hero’s new tab page. You know how favoriting a webpage ads a link to that page to your browser? Either in your new tab, or a browser toolbar? Well, TV Hero is that, but worse: no customization, your old new tab page is inaccessible. By installing TV Hero, you lose browser functionality.

What TV Hero actually does is put a search box in the middle of its page – like other newtab viruses. If you use it to search the web, it goes to MySearch.com, which is a search engine with no interesting or valuable features. It’s ad-supported and is owned by the same company as the TV Hero.

TV Hero can see what you do on a few select websites. As a browser extension, it has to declare its abilities before you install it. It can see what ads you click on and everything that you do on Ask.com and MySearch.com. TV Hero can also see your browsing history and what browser extensions you installed. Meanwhile, MySearch can read and change your browsing history and set your search settings to search.mysearch.com.

Thanks to TV Hero, you can see ads in MySearch search results. The ads are based on your browsing habits and other data that is collected by TV Hero and third parties. Advertisers use the data that TV Hero collects to choose which ads to show you. Behavioral ads are very effective and they’re very economical for advertisers – they don’t have to waste money advertising to you if they know you’re not interested in their product. But to know whether you’re interested, advertisers need to know what you like. And TV Hero is there to help them find out, at the cost of your privacy.
