Twistedsearch.com Redirects - How to remove

By Urte

Twistedsearch.com causes Yahoo redirects in your browser. Twisted Search is a browser extension that, once installed, changes browser settings: it changes the default search engine to Feed.twistedsearch.com. Besides hijacking your traffic, Twistedsearch.com does nothing useful and it should be removed as soon as it’s discovered. Especially as it sometimes gets installed deceptively.

Twistedsearch.com is a hijacker

Twistedsearch.com is a website related to the browser extension Twisted Search. It’s made by Linkury, a known developer of potentially unwanted programs. Under its belt, Linkury has its SmartBar, TinyChill, PDFPros, MySportTab, and many more – a pretty random assortment of browser extensions. But all these browser extensions are much more similar than you might think. They all either replace the browser’s new tab page, or change its search settings.

Twisted Search does the latter, it replaces the browser’s search engine settings. Every time you try to use your address bar or your default new tab to search for something, Twistedsearch.com gets your query and sends it to whatever site it wants (Yahoo).

Browser add-ons (or extensions) are little apps made to change how a web browser works, while browser hijackers are add-ons that attempt to take over the browser to somehow squeeze out some monetary gain. For example, by injecting ads into the browser.

Twisted Search replaces the default search engine – this is the site that delivers your internet search results. Search engines can be very lucrative just by showing a few ads with search results. So, Twistedsearch.com hijacks your searches and forces you to use its partner site, to see its ads. It’s to make money from your traffic.

Twistedsearch.com can read and log your search queries, while Twisted Search can read your browsing history. This data is used for direct marketing.

Twistedsearch.com new tab page features a search bar and a few half-functioning utilities.

How Twisted Search spreads

Twistedsearch.com is advertised online by ad-networks like AdsTerra and Propeller Ads. Ads for Twistedsearch.com get put up on various online converters, streaming sites, URL shorteners, file hosting sites, and others. These types of websites often have a lot of low-quality ads, so it’s not surprising that they promote Twistedsearch.com, too.

One common feature of the listed sites is being used for piracy. File hosting sites and monetized URL shorteners are sometimes used to distribute pirated files, while free streaming sites are obviously infringing. I’m not saying that pirating will always lead to malware, but that it’s important to be careful and try to protect yourself. It’s important to use antivirus apps and to block malicious sites.

It’s possible that you don’t go to dangerous sites but still ended up with Twisted Search hijacking your browser. A possible explanation could be a malicious browser extension (other than Twisted Search). There are all kinds of malicious extensions. Some inject ads into Google.com or Bing.com search results. Some show notification pop-ups. Check your browser extensions, read each of their permissions, and look for any that can change your data on Google.com or change your search settings.

Twisted Search uses something that looks like a fake download button to trick people into installing it.

How to get rid of Twistedsearch.com redirects

There are a few things that need to be done to get rid of the Twisted Search hijacker:

  • remove the Twisted Search extension from your browser,
  • check your other extensions and remove or disable the ones with suspicious permissions,
  • check notification settings and block unwanted notifications,
  • check your apps and programs for bundlers and potentially unwanted software,
  • set up web security to block malicious ads and sites.

Removing Twisted Search is very simple, just right-click the extension’s icon and choose the “Remove…” option. Alternatively, open browser settings where you can read the details on each of your extensions. Any extensions that try to change your search settings, read and change your data on all websites, and similar need to be examined and possibly temporarily disabled.

An easy way to check your computer for malware, dangerous browser extensions, and potentially unwanted programs is to use an anti-malware program (such as Spyhunter for PC, Combo Cleaner for Mac, and others). Check the scan results to see if antivirus apps find something suspicious that you may have missed.

If Twistedsearch.com or another site is sending you unwanted notifications, you can disable them yourself in browser settings:

  • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

There is the list of all the sites that are allowed to send notifications to your browser. Next to each address is a menu that you can bring up. In it, there’s the option to block or deny notifications from the site. If Twistedsearch.com is on the list, block its notifications and it won’t be able to send you any more pop-ups.
