What is Uistration.work
Advertising website
Uistration.work is an ad spamming website that hijacks web push notifications in order to deliver its ads. If you see little pop-up messages that come from Uistration.work, these are most likely caused by hijacked notifications.
Uistration.work is advertised online, mostly on websites for downloading free media, watching free movies online, etc. I first encountered it on File-upload.com.
It is also promoted by adware viruses. If you see your browser opening new tabs on its own or redirecting you to unwanted sites, this might be caused by an adware infection.
Uistration.work has many faces, including a movie updates page and a blank page with nothing but a loading bar. It says “tap the Allow button to continue”. It uses this misleading page to trick people into subscribing to its ads. If you see a page like this, it’s best to close it. But if you do allow notifications from a dubious website, they’re easy enough to block, so it’s not a big deal.
What causes Uistration.work ads
If this and other unwanted sites are opened as pop-ups while you’re browsing the web, they might be shown as advertisements. Especially when they only appear on particular websites.
If this and other sites are opened on your screen without your actions, then there might be a malicious program on your device that’s causing this. A browser extension or a program.
For instance, an app was recently described that had been safe but was updated to include malicious features. It caused spam webpages to open in the browser.
How to stop Uistration.work ad spam
Block ad spam from unwanted sites
If ads labeled with “Uistration.work” are showing up on your screen, this is most likely caused by hijacked notifications. To block unwanted notifications, open the relevant settings page in your browser:
- Chrome – open Settings, scroll down to Site settings (under Privacy and security), click on Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – open Settings, click Site Permissions, Notifications.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
Now review all the addresses marked as “Allow”. These are all the sites that are able to send messages to your browser. If you see sites that you don’t wish to see messages from, such as Uistration.work, switch their permission to “Block” (or “Deny”).
You can also block all notification prompts as described in this post on web push notifications.
Remove all adware
Check your device for malware. This is especially important if you observe your browser opening unfamiliar webpages on its own, without you even touching the screen.
You can use anti-malware programs like Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, Malwarebytes, and others. Scan your device and if your anti-malware app detects some malicious, suspicious, or unwanted programs, remove them.
You can also manually review the apps and browser add-ons that you installed recently or that were updated recently. Try to disable them and see if that stops the Uistration.work spam and unwanted sites being opened.
Block ads and malicious websites
To protect yourself from ad spam, you can block malicious websites and ads. There are programs that block ads, as well as those that block malicious websites. Some anti-malware programs can also block malicious sites.
Not all websites show dangerous ads. But some should just never be visited without the protection of an ad blocker. Pirating sites, such as free movie streaming sites, are some of the sites that tend to show obnoxious and harmful ads.
