How to remove UpgradeAnalog
UpgradeAnalog is malware, mainly a browser hijacker. However, removing it is more complicated than just uninstalling an app and getting rid of a browser extension. You can use an anti-malware app (like Combo Cleaner, Malwarebytes, etc.) to find and remove UpgradeAnalog automatically. You can delete it manually. You might need to combine both methods. UpgradeAnalog has some files hidden in system folders that need to be deleted first.
Safe mode is a mode that doesn’t run unnecessary apps (Support.apple.com). Use it to stop UpgradeAnalog temporarily. Restart your Mac and hold the Shift button. Safe mode is indicated by “Safe Boot” appearing in the upper right corner.
Open Finder, click Go in the menu, and select Go to Folder. Type in the names of the hidden folders that UpgradeAnalog uses to hold its settings and scripts:
- /Library/LaunchAgents
- /Library/LaunchDaemons
- ~/Library/LaunchAgents
- ~/Library/Application Support
The tilde is important, it indicates your home directory. Normally, the aforementioned folders are hidden because they hold important settings and it would be bad if you accidentally deleted some of their files. Perfect for malware like UpgradeAnalog to hide it. If you delete the UpgradeAnalog application without removing its hidden files, it can return and reinstall on its own. Look for files with “UpgradeAnalog” in their names. And look for folders with long names full of letters and numbers. Make backups of the folders and then delete the suspicious files.
Another place where UpgradeAnalog puts its settings is in System Preferences -> Profiles. It uses profiles to change your browser settings. Delete the profiles that belong to the adware.
So, now you should be able to permanently delete UpgradeAnalog from the Applications folder and remove the extensions in your web browsers. Consider using an anti-malware app to block malicious sites.
About UpgradeAnalog
UpgradeAnalog is adware
UpgradeAnalog changes how your web browsers work. It sets a new default search engine (often it’s Yahoo.com) and changes the home page. And there’s no way to reverse the changes without removing the UpgradeAnalog browser extension, which remains firmly rooted in by the configuration profile that UpgradeAnalog created. So, there UpgradeAnalog, reading your browsing history and search terms and using that information to deliver you targeted ads, with no clear way to stop this abuse.
Ads, pop-ups, new tabs can be opened by UpgradeAnalog in the infected browsers. Those ads often lead to objectionable and potentially dangerous content, from cryptocurrency trading scams to unregulated fitness supplements.
On top of that, there’s a chance that your network settings were compromised by UpgradeAnalog, too. Some victims of malware similar to UpgradeAnalog complained about connectivity issues, low speed, and some sites just not loading. If in Network -> Advanced -> Proxies a SOCKS proxy is ticked and you didn’t do that, it might be UpgradeAnalog’s fault. Malicious apps sometimes use proxy settings to redirect victims’ traffic through their own servers.
It’s also a trojan
UpgradeAnalog gets downloaded bundled with free apps, offered alongside them, hidden in walls of text, already allowed to install by default without the user’s knowledge. If you download apps from shady websites, you’re familiar with this practice of unwanted software hitching a ride with a free application. Sometimes, the unwanted apps are harmless. Other times, they’re malware.
UpgradeAnalog can also be advertised by malicious sites that are pretending to offer official software updates. Have you ever seen a pop-up that claims that you must install something to proceed? Often that something is disguised as Adobe Flash Player, but it can be any trusted name. For example, I’ve seen deceptive ads telling me to install “Google”! Malicious actors create these pages and then use them to trick people to download adware bundles.
If UpgradeAnalog came in that sort of a bundle, it was likely not the only malicious app that got installed. Check your Mac for more suspicious items, especially various Mac cleaners. These things might try to get you to pay for fake tech support.
