VideoConverterHD is a piece of potentially unwanted software. It offers easy access to video converters that would convert streaming videos to downloadable videos. Video converters are a popular type of website that some people find extremely useful, so it seems like VideoConverterHD could be useful to them. Unfortunately, this add-on is a browser hijacker — a dishonest browser extension that changes browser settings to more easily show ads.

Once installed, VideoConverterHD (or Video Converter HD) sets its own new tab page which has a search bar that records your queries and sends them to MyWay, a search engine owned by the same company that developed VideoConverterHD. The extension watches your browsing habits uses that data to help advertisers know what ads are more effective for you. This is how most browser hijackers work — it doesn’t mean that they aren’t useful, but it is important that everyone who installs VideoConverterHD knows why this extension exists and what it does.
As for VideoConverterHD’s functionality, it’s very limited. The extension doesn’t do anything other than post a few hyperlinks to other websites, most of which have nothing to do with video converting.
Problems with VideoConverterHD
While VideoConverterHD is not a virus, the issues with it are still important. A few of the problems with this add-on are:
- Too many ads in the search results of the site promoted by VideoConverterHD.
- The developers partnered with adware viruses to promote VideoConverterHD.
- VideoConverterHD is a carbon copy of preexisting browser hijackers with no innovation.
First of all, VideoConverterHD triggers quite a few antivirus programs. You can see that some detections explicitly mention Mindspark, the developers of VideoConverterHD, as if their extensions make up a category on their own. Myfashiontab.com, EverydayMemo, ReadingFanatic — there are so many of these hijacker extensions, and they’re all almost identical. The goal of these add-ons is to get more users for MyWay and Ask search.
One of the biggest problems is how VideoConverterHD is distributed.
Ads are used to get more people to see and install VideoConverterHD, but not all of them are legitimate. Redirects from and ads on sites like Y2mate and Mp3hub can open VideoConverterHD’s installation page, sometimes by going through adware sites like news-easy.com. It is unfortunate that this extension’s developers partner with such malicious advertisers, but when their extensions are considered adware by so many cybersecurity tools, it’s not surprising. Legitimate advertising networks like PopAds and Adcash are also involved in promoting VideoConverterHD. By the way, one of the ad publishers for VideoConverterHD, onlinevideoconverter, actually accidentally distributed a file-encrypting virus for a while.
Privacy might also be a concern for some users, as well as being exposed to an increased number of ads. VideoConverterHD’s promoted search engine shows a lot of promoted content in the search results which is a problem in this world where ads are already ubiquitous. Wasted time scrolling past the poorly labeled and irrelevant ads will be increasingly frustrating the more you use VideoConverterHD.
How to avoid browser hijackers
It might be a good idea to avoid extensions altogether. The more extensions, the more trouble. These are pieces of software that you’re giving access to your browser, which is a program that you use for some very important tasks. There is a lot of power that you’re implicitly giving the developers of your browser add-ons. And not all developers deserve that trust.
Be skeptical of warnings and offers that tell you to install things, especially when they originate in your browser. Be careful when installing free software and weigh the additional offers carefully. Basically, be aware that the internet is full of scammers and fraudsters.
Most importantly, install a strong antivirus program and update it as frequently as it needs you to. Don’t forget to install updates for your browser and operating system.
If you want to keep using your own search engine, you’ll have to uninstall VideoConverterHD. That’s fine, there is no shortage of various extensions, and you might be able to find one that isn’t malicious. Alternatively, you could just use a website without installing an extension. After all, VideoConverterHD does nothing for converting but open video conversion websites.
How to remove VideoConverterHD
Review what programs you have installed and get rid of the ones that aren’t needed. If you just look up online the name of each program, you should find the information that you need. Remember that you can always reinstall a program even if you uninstall it. As a bonus, if you had a few potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), uninstalling them should improve your machine’s performance.
Next, review and remove unwanted extensions — VideoConverterHD might not be the only risky add-on that you have installed. Browser add-ons can be removed by simply accessing your browser settings (a detailed guide is included below). The problem with having too many extensions installed is that each one is a potential security risk. The biggest problem is the extensions with the riskiest permissions. Were those abused by the developers, your data could be compromised.
Make sure to have an aggressive antivirus tool (Spyhunter, others) examine your machine for any suspicious files and programs. It wouldn’t be good if stealthy spyware or a malicious trojan was allowed to remain on your computer and cause trouble later, and it’s really better to be careful.
