The fake version of VMC Media Player transmits Fatalerror Scam app, which belongs to the Rogue Tech-Support-Scam family. In fact, when a user downloads and installs the fake version of VMC Player, no media player or similar program is set up on his/her computer. Instead, the scam app Fatalerror is installed. Thus, it is obvious that the tech support scam is disguised as a VMC Media Player. And the latter fraudulent practice is invoked to spread the scam.
About VMC Media Player (Fake)/ Fatalerror Scam
The false version of VMC Media Player brings a technical support scam Fatalerror onto your computer’s system. The latter application generates fake system error messages or false security alerts. The executable file of this scam is named fatalerror.exe. When the unauthentic VMC Media Player is installed and the scam app is set up, BSOD (i.e. Blue Screen of Death) is caused. This refers to fake Windows crashes induced not by the actual failure of the system but by the rogue scam app – Fatalerror. After BSOD takes place, your computer is shut down, displaying a Thank You prompt. When your computer is rebooted, you are presented with the fake BSOD.
The BSOD message declares that there has been a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with gv3.sys or that your computer has been shut down because Zeus virus has infected the system and it was no way but to shut down the device so that further damage would be prevented from happening. You are also prompted to download a product key. And the contact number – +1(866)933-5430 – of a so-called Microsoft technical support group is provided. When you contact those cyber criminals pretending to be Microsoft technicians, you are offered to purchase bogus security software or services.
This Blue Screen of Death will also contain a Microsoft Help button. If you click it, you will be redirected to www.microsoft.aios.us. This domain promotes the installation of software such as Supremo, Ammyy, TeamViewer, etc. These tools serve the same purpose as the fake VMC Media Player or a Fatalerror scam program. They will further threaten you to push further rogue software on you. This fake crash screen will also suggest to download and execute the file titled license_key.exe. This executable will install another tech support scam, known as ProductKey.
