VPNTop scam is one of those services that offer free-trials and could require credit card information. Recently, a lot similar hoaxes have been circulating around. PCProtect also promised to function like a VPN tool, but turned out to charge users’ credit cards without permission.
In addition to this, we have Nonestops.biz is also a similar fraudulent service, stating that it helps its clients access websites that are usually out of reach due to geo-restrictions (Geo blocking). We do not think that such services should be used, especially the ones that can bill you fines without your consent or knowledge.
VPNTop service is not a service to order
VPNTop service functions the same way similar DNS tools do. It replaces users’ real IP address with a more appropriate one. Let’s say you are an Internet visitor from Europe and you cannot access video-streaming services from United States of America. The way to bypass geo-limitations is to switch the unfit IP address with the one, indicating the region of US (How to access region-locked websites?). VPNTop scam is mostly focusing on people from China, Dubai and USA. A similar suspicious tool is called VPN Apps.
If you decide to sign up for a free trial, you will be promised 3 days of free-of-charge services for 3 devices simultaneously. The will work on operating systems, running on WindOws, Mac, iOS, Android and Linux. Also, users are lured with unlimited bandwidth and multiple VPN protocols.
If during registration you are required to reveal your banking account details, cancel the registration process immediately (Free trial offers). We do not trust that VPNTop services will do a sufficient job. We suspect that it could trick users into revealing their personally-identifiable information. Fees may include activation, recurring subscription, and usage fees.
While we were examining the EULA document of VPNTop scam, we barely found any more information about the free trial. Will the charges be made automatically if users does not cancel his/her membership? Lack of details about this arrangement makes us question the respectability of this service. We also find this specific statement suspicious:
“VPNTOP.com will automatically deposit Your Account with an amount equal to your original deposit by charging your designated payment method on a monthly basis.”
We do not know the company which is responsible for this VPNTop service. In the official website, they claim to be a Canada-based company, located at 1017 – 135 West Beaver Creek Road, Richmond Hill, Ontario, L4B 4R9, Canada. However, we did not figure out which organization is located in there. The ones we found did not look like they had anything to do with the investigated VPN service.
How to find a respectable VPN service? How to detect a possible scam?
VPNTop scam offers its services for 10-dollars-a-month, but also suggests users to get 12-month deal for 60 US dollars. If you are very determined to access the restricted websites, we advise you to find another service. Some of the legitimate VPN services are pricy; therefore, this might seem as a good alternative. However, the service has been noticed to collect information about its clients. Under certain circumstances, these details can be shared with third-parties. If you value your privacy, we encourage you to select a more appropriate tool.
Pay attention to the developers that introduce services. For instance, if there is not information about the owners of the tool you found, we suggest you to move on. Furthermore, this tool could be considered a potentially unwanted program (PUP) if it arrives together with other free programs. During installation processes of freeware, always select advanced or custom modes. They will allow you to see everything that the installer will insert into your computer. If you find out that free trials or other redundant applications are offered, decline these offers. For more protection, use Spyhunter.
