WalletBee is yet another application listed as an adware and a PUP (potentially unwanted program) due to several malicious actions that it performs. It is not only disturbing and annoying with all those advertisements on your favourite web browser, but malicious as well as it can lead you to some serious cyber security problems. Let’s break it up step by step for you.
WalletBee is completely free for users. You can easily download and install it for free. It works as a browser add-on that can be added to all most popular web browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. You can find the description of this application at their official website at www.walletbee.com. It says:
“WalletBee is a dynamic online tool that automatically offers you relevant deals according to your online searches in real time. Who can benefit from WalletBee?
Everyone! WalletBee was developed to serve those who are always looking for the best deals online.”
So if you have this plugin installed on your web browser, you will be provided with various coupons, deals and other commercial offers that should help you to save both your time and money when shopping inline. However, this is far from reality. Those ads appear mostly on e-commerce websites, such as eBay or Amazon and offers you to purchase particular goods at a better price rate. You should not fall for that because most of those ads are fake – there are no such prices or even such goods. WalletBee works as a middleman between users and third parties that use this advertising network to promote their products or services. The biggest problem is that WalletBee does not separate their “bad” and “good” sponsors – everyone who are wiling to pay money for advertising through this system are good to go. And this puts you into an actual risk of getting hacked or scammed because various cyber criminals use WalletBee advertising system and promote their products or services this way. They try to create as attractive advertisements as they can to make you click on them and tempt to buy something from them. Even though those ads looks very appealing, you should not click on any of them in any way. If you do so, you will be immediately redirected to third parties website that may be infected by mentioned cyber criminals and cause your computer being infected with another virus or even you getting scammed. And you don’t want this to happen, right? It is worth mentioning that this malicious application operates only on Windows OS (all versions from Windows XP to Windows 8.1) and is not available on Macs. Furthermore, if you take a look at their Privacy Policy, you will find an interesting statement:
“We collect two types of data and information from our Users:
a. The first type of information is non-personally identifiable information pertaining to a User, which may be made available or gathered via the User’s use of WalletBee (“Non-personal Information”). We are not aware of the identity of the User from which the Non-personal Information was collected. Non-personal Information which is being collected consists of technical information and aggregated usage information, and may contain, among other things, the activity of the User on WalletBee, type of operation system, User’s ‘click-stream’ on WalletBee and any e-commerce websites operated by third parties (including Third Party Services, as such term is defined in the Terms), including but not limited to search queries and related searches on search engines, browser type, language and keyboard language, etc.
b. The second type of information is individually identifiable information, namely information that identifies an individual or may with reasonable effort identify an individual, or may be of private or sensitive nature (“Personal Information”).
Personal Information which is being gathered consists of the following:
The User’s IP address or other persistent user identifier, which is automatically provided by the User and used mainly for enhancing the User’s experience and for geolocation personalization and security purposes, as further detailed below; and
Any Personal Information provided voluntarily by the User via WalletBee, such as the User’s e-mail address in order to be contacted, the User’s answers to questions presented to the User through WalletBee, or other actions performed by the User in connection with WalletBee.
For avoidance of doubt, any Non-personal Information connected or linked to any Personal Information shall be deemed as Personal Information as long as such connection or linkage exists.
We do not collect any Personal Information from you or related to you without your approval, which is obtained, inter alia, through your active acceptance to the Terms and this Privacy Policy.”
Basically this means that WalletBee will collect your personal information, such as browsing history, search queries, Top visited sites or even email address and transfer or sell it to third parties. They adjust their ads according to the given data and make them more relevant to your browsing habits, so the chances that someone will click on them rise. In case your e-mail address will be sold, you will receive tons of spam emails with prompts to purchase something.
WalletBee seeks to impress users and convince them that it is a valuable tool so they would want to keep this application, because the bigger audience they gather, the bigger is the revenue. They get paid for generating web traffic and collecting sales leads. Another interesting attribute – there are no valid contact information on their official website. This means that if something wrong happens due to activities of this application, no one will hold the responsibility for this. WalletBee is not officially a dangerous virus, although it can lead you to some serious problems, therefore it needs to be removed as soon as possible.
If you noticed that WalletBee is operating on your computer, but you don’t remember installing it, might be that it get installed on your computer bundled with other free software. It is the most common distribution method of this malicious application. When you download and install some free software from the Internet, there is a chance that WalletBee will be installed alongside. In order to avoid this, you need to pay attention to the installation process of freebies downloaded from websites with a questionable reputation. Do not skip any steps and opt out for a custom or advanced install mode if possible. This will allow you to see all available options. Reading all terms and conditions would be wise too. During the installation look for various checkboxes that can be already checked for you. If you see that some additional software that you are not aware of is being installed alongside – do not allow it as it can possibly be another WalletBee or other unwanted application. If it is too late and your computer is already infected with this malware, you should wait no more and take needed actions to get rid of it right now. To accomplish this, you can choose one from several ways. One of them, and probably the easiest one is to download and install some trustworthy anti-malware software, such as SpyHunter, Malwarebytes or StopZilla and scan your computer with it. It will detect and remove the virus automatically and protect your computer from similar infections in the future as well. If you don’t feel like using any additional software, you can perform this manually too. To do this, simply follow our step-by-step WalletBee removal guide given below.
