What is Web-explore.com
Web-explore.com is pretty terrible. It doesn’t have any unique features to talk about. There are normal results, images, videos, and maps, but no filtering by date, color, language, or anything. Web-explore.com is way behind all mainstream search engines.
It’s a custom Google search engine – a severely stripped-down version of Google. Google lets people make specialized search engines with its technology for free. And, for the n-th time, someone makes a plain one and floods it with ads, then rakes in the ad money.
Despite being bad to use, Web-explore.com receives over two million users each month. It seems to receive redirects from a few sites that I suspect of being typo squatters or something similar: Org-search.com, Qo-search.com, Qoqo-q.com, etc. They only work in select countries that happen to match Web-explore.com’s userbase: France, Brazil, Colombia, and a few more.
Web-explore.com is quite a suspicious website. I first discovered it through its connection to other adware sites, including Pronto.com, Myway.com, Informationvine.com, and Izito.com. On its own, Web-explore.com is also adware: for even remotely marketable queries, it shows a lot more ads than real results. It’s ridiculous how many ads it includes and how poorly they’re labeled. Frankly, anyone who uses this site regularly is being scammed, as there’s just no excuse to show this many ads.
How to remove Web-explore.com
If you only encountered Web-explore.com once or twice, you’re okay. It’s pretty normal to stumble upon dubious sites by just browsing the web normally. It’s a problem, though, if Web-explore.com keeps showing up and you can’t get rid of it. Here are a few suggestions for stopping it:
- Open browser settings and check your default search engine. If it’s set to something unfamiliar, change it. If a browser extension is controlling the setting, disable that extension.
- Open the browser in incognito/private mode. If the problem goes away, disable your extensions. You need to find the one that causes the issue and remove it. This might be a bit tedious, but enable them one-by-one until Web-explore.com shows up again.
- Check the programs downloaded or installed at or before when Web-explore.com started appearing. Remove the ones that may have caused the issue.
- Scan your computer with a security program, like Spyhunter for PC, Combo Cleaner for Mac, or your favorite anti-malware scanner. These can detect malicious files, programs, and browser extensions and point you in the right direction to removing them.
How to avoid adware sites
Adware sites are annoying, they waste your time, they’re bad for privacy, and sometimes they even link to dangerous and malicious sites. To avoid them, it’s good to know how and where they come from.
Like I said earlier about Web-explore.com, misspelled URLs are used to redirect people to malicious sites. Typosquatting (and its curious variation, bitsquatting) preys on distracted users and redirects them to all kinds of bad sites.
Malicious browser hijackers and software can manipulate your browser, inject ads, and open unwanted sites. They can also replace your default search engine with Web-explore.com. Malware tends to advertise on pirating websites and be promoted by other adware. If you pirate, be extra careful. Don’t install any extensions that are “required” by those sites and scan every downloaded file. Also, try to use legal software as much as possible.
Sometimes bad ads are not about what sites you visit – some unethical ISPs inject ads into sites before showing them to you. You can try using an ad-blocker in that case, or find out the IP from which the ads are coming and block that.
