WebmailWorld advertises itself as a useful and practical web browser extension that can improve your online experience. But, unfortunately, WebmailWorld is just another clone browser hijacker that only serves as a marketing platform, your ad clicks making money to WebmailWorld creators.

WebmailWorld can be considered to be a PUP — potentially unwanted program. This means that, though it is not a virus, it can be harmful in the long run by, for example, compromising your privacy. It can often be found on people’s computers together with Ask — another search engine that seeks to show people ads.
The WebmailWorld installation is already suspicious
WebmailWorld targets Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer users.
It advertises itself with words like “Login To Your Email Faster and get direct access to free web search on your new tab page”. This is dubious, as web search is already free, and the home page of WebmailWorld simply links to a few of the most popular email services — hardy worth installing a whole plugin for.
On Chrome, Immediately as you’re done installing WebmailWorld, you’re prompted to install Ask. It’s even made to look like you’re continuing an ongoing process. It is unusual, deceptive, and makes me only more suspicious of the developers of WebmailWorld. Many people won’t notice that this is a new extension, the “START DOWNLOAD” button is big and bright, and the “No thanks” button is tiny and grey.
And if you read the permissions that Ask and WebmailWorld ask for, it’s no wonder why they are considered to be browser hijackers:
-
- Read and change all your data on the websites you visit
- Read and change your browsing history
- Display notifications
- Change your search settings to: search.tb.ask.com
- Manage your downloads
- Manage your apps, extensions, and themes
This is a tremendous amount of control over your browser, all for a new, low-quality home page. Extensions similar to WebmailWorld use these permissions to sometimes direct users to affiliated sites and to make using another search engine more inconvenient.
What does WebmailWorld do?
Apps like WebmailWorld collect information on their users so that it can be used to deliver you personalised advertisements.
Indeed, the results on MyWay search engine (the one that WebmailWorld uses) are mixed with a ridiculous number of stealthy ads. I counted 9 ads for 10 results (if you manage to see the tiny “ad” label). Other search engines show ads in search results, too, but there they are far fewer and actually clearly labeled.
Ultimately, WebmailWorld is adware. It just wants you to click on as many ads as possible and is not giving you a good service in return. This can even be dangerous, as your personal information (email address, demographic info, interests and browsing preferences) being shared with advertisers increases the risk that it will be leaked to cybercriminals who can use it to perform targeted phishing attacks. In worst cases these attacks can end up in your bank account being broken into.
Oh, and on Internet Explorer, the Uninstall link actually doesn’t work, so if you want to uninstall WebmailWorld, you need to figure out yourself how to remove the addon (there is a guide below this article). And on top of everything, the clock on the WebmailWorld homepage doesn’t even show the correct time — It’s late by 8 whole minutes!
How to avoid installing PUPs?
Before installing an extension, program, or application — whether on your browser, computer, or phone — research it, read what other people think about it. You are inviting a piece of software to the same device which you use to do banking operations, online purchases, and where you probably keep some personal information. The software needs to be reputable and trustworthy.
Install things carefully so that malware and bloatware doesn’t slip by without you noticing. Bundling is a popular method of distribution for unethical software. Some freeware installers hide additional programs — ones that you didn’t ask for — in custom options, which not everyone reads. Extensions like WebmailWorld bundle other extensions by deceptively formatting the installation, so it’s safer to install addons from your browser’s official store.
How to remove WebmailWorld
If you added WebmailWorld to Internet Explorer, you will need to remove it using Control Panel. Otherwise, you can do it through browser settings. Not just remove the extensions (plural because it is likely that more than one hijacker is installed), but also notification permissions.
