Is Websearches.club dangerous?
Websearches.club is a website, a search engine. It doesn’t have its own face, instead, it promotes S3arch.page, a separate but closely related search hijacker, and Fxsmash.xyz, another hijacker. But it does deliver internet search results.
However, Websearches.club doesn’t actually search the web. Few search engines do, most of them take the results from other sites (for example, Bing powers Yahoo). Nowadays, it is incredibly easy to create a custom search engine and even monetize it with ads.
In theory, custom search engines are supposed to provide unique features, such as a cool new way to display the results or a new filtering method. But Websearches.club lacks features severely. It hardly has any tools to filter the results. It even copies Google’s old visual style. And it shows a lot of ads, unusually many. In the end, Websearches.club is worse than all the major search engines (Meet the Top 10 Search Engines in the World in 2021).
On top of having no useful features, Websearches.club also lacks privacy policy links. This makes it difficult to know what it does with people’s search queries. The phrases we search for can include a lot of private information, such as financial or health info. For a site like Websearches.club to get access to people’s search history, even if it’s not associated with a social media profile, could be dangerous (Browser extensions collect and sell data with almost no oversight). This site is so obscure, it’s not even clear what company is behind it. There’s no way to hold it accountable.
Websearches.club is not dangerous on its own. But it is intrusive and very useless.
How search hijackers spread
Websearches.club is just a website, so what causes browsers to open it on their own? Most likely, it’s a browser extension.
Various browser add-ons cause redirects to Websearches.club as a way to make money. These extensions might have valuable features, but their creator might have wanted to make money from them and included the Websearches.club redirect for that reason. Other malicious extensions have no features, get installed with the help of deceptive ads, and hope to stay unnoticed.
Here are a few ways in which a Websearches.club redirects virus might infect your browser:
- A safe extension might get an update to include the redirect feature.
- A malicious extension might be advertised online in a deceptive way that tricks people into installing it. Users might not realize what they’re doing or they might think that the extension is mandatory.
- An adware bundle can install a bad extension. Some free programs have installers that show ads. Sometimes, these ads are easy to miss or hard to decline, which can cause users to install unwanted software.
Malicious ads can be curbed by ad blockers. Infected and ad-infested installers can be detected by anti-malware scanners, or you can use an online tool, such as Virustotal.com.
How to stop Websearches.club redirects
The Websearches.club redirects are caused by a bad extension installed on the affected web browser, a program installed on the computer, or hijacked browser or network settings.
Find and uninstall or disable all browser extensions that are at all suspicious:
- extensions that you did not install,
- those that change your search settings,
- those that ask for too many permissions.
Even a previously safe extension can be turned into adware with a simple update, so keep that in mind and thoroughly test each extension by disabling it until the Websearches.club redirects stop.
It’s also possible that the appearance of Websearches.club is caused by a malicious program installed on your computer. Check your apps, especially those that were installed at or before the time that Websearches.club started showing up.
It might be helpful to scan your computer with an anti-malware app, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others. These programs can recognize junkware and potentially unwanted apps and warn you about them.
