WebSecurerr Search Redirects - How to remove

WebSecurerr (WebSecurerr Browser Protection) presents itself as a free anti-malware browser add-on. Though it does stop some unwanted sites from opening in your browser, it itself is an unwanted add-on.

It forces users to use Yahoo search. It also replaces the new tab page, which is intrusive and very unhelpful. In short, WebSecurerr behaves like a browser hijacker and we recommend that you don’t use it.

One of the main symptoms that you have WebSecurerr installed is that Go.searchsecurer.com briefly appears in your address bar before it redirects to Yahoo.com.

Is WebSecurerr safe?

How WebSecurerr is installed

It makes unwanted changes to web browsers

WebSecurerr is a popular extension – it has over 200,000 users. Its website, Searchsecurer.com, is also quite popular. However, being popular is not the same as being trustworthy.

Indeed, Searchsecurer.com is detected as Suspicious and Spam by a couple of scanners on Virustotal.com.

Despite having hundreds of thousands of users, the WebSecurerr extension has a measly couple dozen reviews, most of which accuse it of being spam. Such a lack of reviews is characteristic of browser hijackers – extensions that are installed without the user’s knowledge.

Another similarity to hijackers is that WebSecurerr replaces the browser’s default search engine. It promotes Go.searchsecurer.com, which leads to Yahoo search. WebSecurerr says that this is to help people search the web “safely”. However, Yahoo shows the same unsafe search results (for instance, sites like Gamefabrique) that Google and Bing do.

It can read your data

WebSecurerr promises to protect your digital privacy. However, it can read your data on all the sites that you visit. This is a huge privacy issue. Also, Searchsecurer.com can redirect your searches to any site it wants. This is a lot of power.

WebSecurerr shows alerts and its own search bar.

WebSecurerr is advertised online

Many of the WebSecurerr reviews complain about WebSecurerr’s pop-up ads. They said that that this extension basically bullied them into installing it.

Ads for WebSecurerr tend to appear on shady sites, such as file pirating and “free” movie streaming sites.

Once, I encountered WebSecurerr when I was looking into a notification spammer (Allfreshposts.com). It redirected my browser to Searchsecurer.com. Being advertised by a notification spammer – not a good look.

How WebSecurerr affects web browsers

It hijacks searches

When I installed WebSecurerr, it set Go.searchsecurer.com as my default search engine. This caused Yahoo to return my internet search results. For as long as WebSecurerr is installed, I can’t change my search engine.

This – making people use Yahoo – is done to make some money. In theory, it’s meant to keep the extension free. I would guess that WebSecurerr is quite profitable. After all, the web is full of ads for this extension and advertising is not free.

There are better alternatives

As for the main functionality, WebSecurerr does show a pop-up to warn you when you try to visit a malicious site. It detects malicious sites by comparing URLs with its database on Searchsecurer.com. Some of the sites that WebSecurerr detects are responsible for spreading malicious and scammy ads, so it could be somewhat effective at protecting you.

As effective as you could be by finding blocklists that other people have compiled and blocking sites yourself.

WebSecurerr just doesn’t seem worth it to me. It might block some malicious sites, but it’s far less effective than the best ad blockers. And it makes money by forcing you to use a search engine that you may not want to use. No different from all the other browser hijackers.

WebSecurerr asks to access every site that you visit and change your default search engine.

How to delete WebSecurerr

Uninstall WebSecurerr and Searchsecurer.com

You can uninstall WebSecurerr yourself from the menu that appears when you right-click on its icon or from browser settings.

If that fails (for example, if the Remove button is not clickable) then check our post on removing extensions that abuse enterprise policy. In that case, there are a couple of files/settings to delete before the extension can be removed.

Then, check your search engine setting as described below. Make sure that Searchsecurer.com is no longer set as your default search engine.

Delete adware

Some of the reviews of WebSecurerr mentioned that people were seeing repeated ads for WebSecurerr that just would not go away. If this happened to you, then check your other browser extensions and the programs on your computer. You may have been infected with adware. You can also use an anti-malware program that you are comfortable with, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others.
