How Wwmiox.xyz hijacks browsers

Visiting Wwmiox.xyz only shows a basic search engine front page. This page looks like the default page used by Conduit – an old family of browser hijackers (Conduit toolbar). It shouldn’t be relevant anymore, but here we are. Wwmiox.xyz is made by QxSearch, the same people who are also behind Lpxsx.xyz, Vmos.xyz, Qlopx.xyz, Nvo1d.xyz, and a bunch of other sites.

Using Wwmiox.xyz leads to SearchDimension.com, which promotes Yahoo.com. Yahoo is a legitimate search engine, but there are so many browser hijackers and malicious browser extensions that promote it.

Wwmiox.xyz does worse than change your search engine to Yahoo, though. It’s not just a website – it is a part of a browser hijacking scheme. Wwmiox.xyz comes with a browser extension, like SD App, MSrch, Tail Search, and similar. These browser extensions get installed without your permission and then make some unwanted changes to your browser:

  • read your browsing history,
  • log your search terms,
  • inject ads into your internet search results (on Google.com, Bing.com, and Yahoo.com),
  • show malicious pop-ups and ads that try to get you to download more adware,
  • change your default search engine settings.

These malicious browser add-ons get uploaded on the web stores and then removed within weeks.

Wwmiox.xyz's front page looks like Conduit.

How Wwmiox.xyz spreads

You might be curious about how an obnoxious piece of adware like Wwmiox.xyz can make it on people’s computers without them realizing it. The Wwmiox.xyz search hijacker spreads via browser extensions. Browser extensions are little apps that get installed on browsers. They’re small and extremely easy and quick to install (and, luckily, easy to remove). But because they’re so easy to install (all you need to do is click a couple of buttons in your browser), malicious add-ons can easily infect browsers.

One way this happens is because of deceptive ads. For example, some ads are designed to look like Download buttons. They appear on file download sites, so of course people get confused and click the ad instead of the real Download button. The ad then opens the Chrome Web Store and overlays the window with showy arrows and text, trying to encourage you to click that Install button. Plenty of websites have no issue showing deceptive ads like that – after all, the more ad clicks, the more the site gets paid.

Another way for Wwmiox.xyz to spread is for malicious browser extensions to be bundled with other programs. Some free programs install additional unwanted software. It’s called bundling and is often used to spread adware.

How to remove Wwmiox.xyz

First, it’s advisable to check your computer for malware by scanning it with an anti-malware program, like Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others. This is a pretty easy way to get a summary of the programs that need to be removed from your computer. There might be none, but adware viruses often come in groups.

Remove the Wwmiox.xyz hijacker by removing all the suspicious browser extensions. You can do that manually in browser settings. I can’t tell you which extension exactly needs to be removed, but I can tell you how to find it. When you open the browser page with all of your extensions listed (check below on how to do that), you can check the details of each extension. Be suspicious of any extension that:

  • changes your default search engine settings,
  • changes which page opens in your new tab,
  • can read and change your data on all sites,
  • or can read and change your data on Google.com, Bing.com, and Yahoo.com.

If you’re not sure, just disable/turn off an extension and then check how that affected your browser. Are the ads and redirects gone? If yes, then you may want to remove the extension. If not, keep looking.

If the Wwmiox.xyz hijacker refuses to be removed because of Enterprise policy, check out this post on how to solve the issue.

Finally, you may want to use an ad-blocker or an anti-malware app to block malicious sites. It could save you a lot of issues in the future.
