"Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted" Pop-up - How to remove

The “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” warning is a fake alert used to spread malware. It’s a website that performs a fake virus scan which tells you that it found problems with your PC and that you need to use paid software to deal with them. Basically, “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” is a scam to sell you useless software that you don’t need.

This scheme tries to convince visitors that there’s malware on their system that, if not removed ASAP, will cause permanent damage to their system and their files. In reality, it’s just a website that present the same lie to every single visitor. Falling for the “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” hoax could cause you unnecessary stress and to spend money on software that you don’t need.

The “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” warnings are extremely similar to the various Mac warnings, like Zxvcv and Your-mac-security-analysis.net. Scammers spread “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” as ads and redirects, and hope that some victims will fall for the scheme and buy whatever malware is being pushed to them. In fact, the same sites spread similar Mac infection hoaxes, too.

How to stop “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” pop-ups

Most likely, you encountered the “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” site through malicious ads and redirects online – ads shown by adware viruses, in torrent sites, video conversion sites, and similar. As “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” is a website, it can’t be deleted or removed by you, but something might be causing your browser to load this site: either you clicking on dangerous ads, or a malicious program on your PC that forces your browser to open such websites.

If your computer is infected with adware, you should be seeing a lot of pop-ups, banners, floating boxes in almost any site. Some of the pop-ups might say that you need to update your browser or that your computer might be infected – such messages are used to trick people into visiting malicious sites, such as “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted”.

These sites should be ignored and closed immediately. If you don’t interact with the page, your computer should be fine. If you do, it’s still probably okay, but might need a check-up. The site is meant to trick you to download a paid PC optimizer – in my case, it was Qbit PC Speedup. This program is an annoying but useless application that will, like “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted”, pretend that your computer is in danger. However, it shouldn’t cause serious harm, so there’s no need to worry.

You can remove programs like Qbit PC Speedup manually from the Control Panel (the last section of this article), or you can use an antivirus program to do this (for example, SpyHunter). Whichever you do, a scan with a security tool is recommended just to make sure that the program didn’t leave any nasty surprises.

“Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” is a scam

The fake Microsoft website

The first page that you encounter from “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” is about your PC being infected with viruses and threatens that you might lose your files, like photos, if you don’t do anything about it. “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” is made to look like it’s just a recommendation by Microsoft to perform a scan of your computer.

However, there are clear signs that the “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” page is not a Microsoft page:

  • First, the URL has nothing to do with Microsoft or Windows and looks like a meaningless string of numbers and letters. Addresses like d1y37pqemhvmd3.cloudfront.net and Wod007.com. However, a semi-convincing URL can be crafted, for example, a lot of Mac warnings have “mac” and “apple” in the URL (Apple.com-scan-mac.live).
  • A clearer sign that “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” doesn’t live on an official Microsoft site is that the menus on the website aren’t interactive. If you visit a normal Microsoft support website, it’ll have a working menu, a homepage, some additional information at the bottom. That’s all missing in the “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” site because the menus are nothing but an image.

"Fake Antivirus Scan"

False virus scan results

If you agree to the scan being performed, another page loads that claims that your device is “possibly harmed” or “heavily damaged”. The scan was lightning-fast, much faster than it’s physically possible to scan files on a computer – over the internet, no less. There is frankly no way that “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” actually even saw the files on your computer.

It’s also telling that I performed the “Your Windows Computer Could Be Infected” scan on a Mac, a totally different operating system. The scan found a virus in the System32 folder, which exists on all Windows computers but not on my Mac. It’s almost as if the “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” scan is completely fake.

“Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” also presents a pop-up with this text:

System has detected that your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted.

This causes the deletion of your system files.

Follow the instructions immediately to resolve  this problem and make sure your system stays up to date

This pop-up not only threatens you that your system is infected, but that system  files will be deleted, which would likely prevent your PC from functioning correctly unless you reinstalled Windows. It’s meant to scare visitors into acting quickly and rashly. It’s extremely common for scam sites like “Your Windows is currently out of date and corrupted” to threaten you with permanent damage to your computer. However, this website won’t do anything to your files and it’s safe to ignore.
