ZipCloud is a cloud storage program that used to be found in fake software updates. It is not necessarily malicious, but due to the way it was distributed, it is detected as malware by some antivirus programs.
If you found ZipCloud installed on your computer even though you didn’t download it, check it for other unknown programs, too. There could be advertising software and other unwanted items on your device.

What is ZipCloud?
Cloud storage service
ZipCloud is a cloud storage service. It works on Macs and Windows PCs. It allows you to upload and save your files on a server. This is useful for making backups of your files and for accessing them on any device.
Like the very similar MyPC Backup, ZipCloud itself is completely fine. It can be used without worries, with only one issue – you may not want to upload extremely private items, as this is the cloud after all, and there’s a tiny risk of your files being accessible to unauthorized users. But this risk comes with all cloud storage and is not specific to ZipCloud.
ZipCloud offers 1GB of free storage and various paid plans for more storage space. Other cloud storage solutions include Dropbox, Google Drive, Apple iCloud, OneDrive, and others.
Potentially unwanted program
Just like MyPC Backup, ZipCloud is considered to be a potentially unwanted and even malicious program by various antivirus scanners: Virustotal.com. This doesn’t mean that ZipCloud is malicious or that it will hurt your device. But it does mean that antivirus vendors consider it to be problematic.
The biggest problem with ZipCloud is the unintentional installations. A few years ago, it used to be a big problem. ZipCloud would be included with fake Flash Player installers, fake Safari installers, etc. People would find it on their computers and would wonder where it came from.
If ZipCloud was being spread by such ads, then it instantly became suspicious. After all, ads and pop-ups disguised as software updates are commonly used to spread malicious software.
Installed with adware
The unexpected installations of ZipCloud would often include additional items:
- new browser extensions that change the settings of your browser,
- other potentially unwanted programs,
- adware infections that cause new tabs and pop-ups in web browsers,
- pop-up ads for ZipCloud and other apps.
If these problems are present on your computer, they are probably caused by potentially unwanted browser extensions, applications other than ZipCloud, and misconfigured browser settings.
How to remove ZipCloud
If you don’t use ZipCloud, if you didn’t mean to install it, you can remove it manually as described on ZipCloud.com or like you would any other app. On macOS, that means deleting the files of the app. On Windows, it’s going into Settings and remove the program from there.
Besides that, it’s advised to scan your device with an antivirus tool to check for other potentially unwanted items: advertising software, browser hijackers, etc. Antivirus programs like for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, Malwarebytes, and others can be used.
If your web browsers are behaving strangely, check what extensions are installed. Also, review your notification settings:
- Chrome – open Settings, scroll down to Site settings (under Privacy and security), click on Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – open Settings, click Site Permissions, Notifications.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
If unfamiliar or unwanted sites are allowed to send you notifications, you can block their messages on the settings page.
While ZipCloud is not malicious, any third-party app that was installed without your intention is a little suspicious. It’s always worth it to review your computer for other unknown apps.
